Chemistry Facilities

The Chemistry Department is located on the third floor of Brousseau Hall. In addition to the research labs, the facilities include two general chemistry labs, and organic chemistry and advanced organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and several instrumentation labs. The labs have been designed to maximize safety and enhance the students lab experience. The maximum capacity of each lab is capped at 16 which allows each student to have their own work area and with four large hoods per lab, ample hood space. Furthermore, the advanced organic lab includes two walk-in hoods. Each lab is fitted with overhead projection systems for lectures and student presentations.

The faculty at Saint Mary’s are committed to providing a strong lab experience for undergraduate students, both through independent research and as part of the general curriculum. The importance of an independent research experience in the overall education of chemistry students cannot be overemphasized. Please see the individual faculty homepages for more on the ongoing research projects. Chemistry majors are encouraged to participate in the summer research program at Saint Mary’s or other institutions. Project oriented labs are also used in the general curriculum to give all the chemistry students an opportunity to design experiments and develop the interpretive and problem solving skills required for research. Furthermore, use of the advanced instrumentation available at Saint Mary’s is introduced into the introductory labs. Please see the photos below of the facilities and available instrumentation.
